Argh. I totally empathize! My old laptop is over seven years old, and it's had its hard drive replaced about three years ago. It lost some stuff then, but nothing tooooo important, thank goodness (thankfully, it actually acted "weird" before the hard drive died, and that made me back up everything before it crashed completely). I finally got a new one this summer, but still … it's no fun to be without one, or do deal with all the stuff that goes missing, etc. Glad it seemed to be "okayish" to the Doctor, though — hope it lasts well until you can replace it!!
