Purple is, next to royal blue, one of the best power colors to me. I feel confident when I'm wearing it, and I'm sure that's the reason why this color is associated with kings and queens (and certain elite marksmen ;) ) Anyway, this batch was created for Round 1 of [livejournal.com profile] splash20in20. Enjoy!

autumn: purple grapes; the best of them come from the Napa Valley in California and are mainly used to produce the legendary Shiraz wine.

nose down: Promo pic for the Christmas special of "Sherlock", picturing Benedict Cumberbatch.

Artist's Choice:

The amethyst is one of the most beautiful gemstones I've ever seen. According to the legend, it gained its beautiful color when Bacchus, the Greek god of wine and debauchery, fell in love with the mortal girl Amethyste. The girl didn't exactly return the feelings and called the goddess Diana for help, who turned her to a stone with the color of the purest white you can imagine. When Bacchus saw the girl's sacrifice, he poured some of his symbolic wine over the stone, creating the characteristic shades of purple this way.

Beautiful story, isn't it? Well, but the truth is that iron impurities and trace elements are the parties responsible for the various shades of purple in this variation of quartz. The most precious ones, those with the darkest shades of the color, come from mines in Siberia, Russia, followed by those from Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico.

Oh, and Bacchus is, somehow, also linked to the name of the gemstone: "amethustos" is old Greek and can be translated as "not drunk", and for centuries, people wore the stone as kind of protection against drunkenness.
