alt02: texture made by [livejournal.com profile] deny1984, but too beautiful to pass it up

vintage: I have a thing for vintage cars, which all started when I saw my first vintage VW Beetle as a kid. So, of course, my mind immediately went to one of those wonderful old vehicles, in this case a 1934 Pierce Arrow.

Artist's Choice - Emeralds:

Like with the AC in Round 1, I went with gemstones, this time of the green variation, also known as emeralds.

The emerald is a variation of the mineral beryl, gaining its green color from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. Only those stones with a deep, rich green color are entitled to be named Emerald, other green variations (where the green is either mixed with other colors or a lighter tone) are named either Green Beryl (light green), Aquamarine (greenish blue) or Heliodor (green yellow)

Unlike other gemstones, emeralds can be found nearly all over the world, from Austria to Colombia, Brazil, Zambia, the United States, Canada and Afghanistan. The most precious ones come from three large mines in Colombia, as well as from Zambia.

Throughout history, emeralds were always the chosen gemstone of power. Many rulers, from the legendary Egyptian empress Cleopatra to the maharajas of India and to the kings and queens of Europe, had at least one big emerald in their crown jewels, expressing their wealth and power.

The Gachalá Emerald (ac03) and the Chalk Emerald (ac08) are among the biggest emeralds ever found, though they have been cut into pieces over the time. Both gemstones can be found in museums these days - the Gachalá at the Smithsonian Institution, the Chalk Emerald ring at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, both in in Washington D.C.

Drawing this entry to a conclusion, here's a link to a very interesting article about the meaning, use and influence of an emerald to our body: CrystalVaults - Emerald
