Purple is, next to royal blue, one of the best power colors to me. I feel confident when I'm wearing it, and I'm sure that's the reason why this color is associated with kings and queens (and certain elite marksmen ;) ) Anyway, this batch was created for Round 1 of [livejournal.com profile] splash20in20. Enjoy!

NOTES

autumn: purple grapes; the best of them come from the Napa Valley in California and are mainly used to produce the legendary Shiraz wine.

nose down: Promo pic for the Christmas special of "Sherlock", picturing Benedict Cumberbatch.

Artist's Choice:

The amethyst is one of the most beautiful gemstones I've ever seen. According to the legend, it gained its beautiful color when Bacchus, the Greek god of wine and debauchery, fell in love with the mortal girl Amethyste. The girl didn't exactly return the feelings and called the goddess Diana for help, who turned her to a stone with the color of the purest white you can imagine. When Bacchus saw the girl's sacrifice, he poured some of his symbolic wine over the stone, creating the characteristic shades of purple this way.

Beautiful story, isn't it? Well, but the truth is that iron impurities and trace elements are the parties responsible for the various shades of purple in this variation of quartz. The most precious ones, those with the darkest shades of the color, come from mines in Siberia, Russia, followed by those from Brazil, Uruguay and Mexico.

Oh, and Bacchus is, somehow, also linked to the name of the gemstone: "amethustos" is old Greek and can be translated as "not drunk", and for centuries, people wore the stone as kind of protection against drunkenness.

Thank you! Yes, they are, though the stone is even more beautiful when you see one for real. It's captivating, especially when it's a druse stone (#2 and #6). You can't see every single crystal, and you feel the itch to explore the depths, if only to see all of the beauty it holds.

thank you! Yeah, though using the amethyst was kind of a last minute idea. At first, I had planned with fashion items (think bags, shoes, jewelry) for the AC, but while looking for the jewelry, I more or less stumbled over some really stunning amethyst pics, and, well the rest is history, so to speak ;)

thank you! Yeah, if you go through my icon posts, you can see that I LOVE vibrant colors. So, unless the challenge calls for rather muted colors, you'll always gonna see colors at their brightest here in my journal.

thank you! Well, I chose this version, though there's a rather similiar one starring the Roman god Dionysos (which is, imho, not quite as beautiful as this one from the Greeks)

Summer was pretty much a taken theme from the very start, since the big fields of lavender are all but screaming "summer" to me. And "nose down" was just happening, since the pic I initially had planned for it didn't work the way I wanted it to.

You're welcome. :) Ooh, I shall have to do that then. Love vibrant colored icons. Always a treat to find more to squirrel away to use later on (with credit of course).

These are so pretty! My faves are Spring, Nose Down (hurray for Bendisnoot love), and your ac cohesiveness is wonderful. I loved that you included a backstory too. :)

thank you! I couldn't resist telling the story, since she's so wonderful (like most of those ancient tales). And I take it that "Bendisnoot" is kind of a nickname for Ben Cumberbatch, right?

PS: is that one of the Beatles in your icon??
